Generate audio for your cards
Public decks and Premium accounts get text-to-speech audio generated automatically for cards, which also unlocks the Audio game for Premium users.

How it works
You don't have to request audio card by card. Audio is generated automatically when you save a card when either:
- you are on a Premium plan, or
- the deck is public
as long as the target language has a voice available.
Open a card and expand the auto-generated section to see where it stands:
- Audio available - click to hear it.
- Audio is being generated... - the deck was just published or the card was just saved; audio arrives shortly.
- No audio generated yet - the card has no audio (usually a private deck on the free plan).
- On a new card, you'll see that audio will be generated after saving when the deck qualifies.
Cards you created before upgrading are filled in too: Premium accounts get missing audio generated by a nightly background job, so a large library can take a few nights to finish. Saving a card again generates its audio straight away, and so does publishing the deck.
Where audio shows up
- A speaker button on the card in your deck and in your vocabulary list. Anyone can play existing audio, including visitors on public decks.
- During games, if you've turned on autoplay in your language settings.
- In the Audio game, which plays a word and asks you to pick the right meaning. That game is Premium-only and needs at least 4 cards with audio in the deck before it appears.
- On sentence and deck blocks inside notebooks.
Supported languages
Google Text-to-Speech has voices for over 50 languages, covering most widely studied ones. If yours isn't one of them, the card editor says so instead of showing an audio status, and no amount of upgrading or publishing will change it - the voice simply doesn't exist on Google's side.
For Chinese you can choose between simplified and traditional script in your language settings, and the audio follows that choice.
Some languages offer several regional accents. Premium users can choose which one to use - Mexican rather than Castilian Spanish, for instance.
On the free plan
Private decks do not get audio. Publish the deck to generate audio for free, or upgrade to Premium to keep the deck private and still get audio. The Audio game stays Premium either way.
