Choose a regional accent for audio
Premium users can pick which regional accent and voice gender Yalango uses for text-to-speech in each language, listening to each option before saving.
Spanish sounds different in Mexico City and in Madrid, and Portuguese in Sao Paulo is not Portuguese in Lisbon. If you are learning towards one of them, Yalango can use that accent for all of your audio.
Where to find it
Go to Language Settings and pick the language you want in the navigation bar. If Google offers more than one voice for it, a Voice setting appears at the top of the list.
The dropdown lists each accent with the voice gender, for example "Mexico - female" or "United Kingdom - male". Choosing Default voice hands the decision back to Google.
Only some languages have a choice to make. Most have exactly one voice, and for those the setting is hidden rather than shown as a dropdown with one entry.
Listen before you decide
The speaker button next to the dropdown plays a short sample phrase in the accent you have selected. Previewing is free and unlimited, and works on the free plan too - so you can hear what the voices sound like before deciding whether to upgrade.
Nothing is saved until you press Save voice.
What happens to audio you already have
When you save a new accent, Yalango regenerates the audio it already made for that language - your deck cards and your vocabulary list. This happens in the background and can take a few minutes for a large collection. You can keep studying while it runs; cards switch over as they are regenerated.
Because re-recording a whole collection is not free, you can change the accent for a given language once a day. Changing your mind before the first regeneration has finished does not count - it just replaces the queued request.
Things worth knowing
- The setting is per language. Spanish and French each have their own accent.
- Chinese covers both Mandarin and Cantonese, so those voices name the spoken variety as well as the region.
- A deck's audio belongs to the deck. If you publish a deck, everyone studying it hears the accent you chose; if you study somebody else's public deck, you hear the accent its author chose.
- Choosing an accent is a Premium feature. On the free plan the dropdown is disabled, though previews still play.
