The Audio game

Audio plays a word aloud and asks you to pick the correct translation. It's the only game that trains listening, so it's the one that carries over most directly to understanding speech.

Audio is a Premium feature.

What you need

Two things:

  1. A Premium subscription. On the free plan the game shows a Premium badge and links to the pricing page.
  2. Cards with generated audio - at least 4 of them in the deck. Audio is created automatically when a Premium account saves a card. See Generate audio for your cards.

On the deck page the Audio tile is hidden until both are true, with a note telling you which is missing:

  • If the language has no voice available, it says the Audio game isn't available for that language - Google doesn't offer text-to-speech for it.
  • If the language is supported but the cards have no audio yet, it says the game unlocks once audio has been generated for the deck's cards.

Playing

Each question plays the word and offers a set of translations to choose from. You can replay the audio, and Don't know skips the card - which counts as a wrong answer, so your level reflects it.

In Mix sessions

Audio also appears inside Mix for Premium accounts, capped at roughly 20% of the session and only on cards that have audio.

If you're somewhere you can't play sound, Can't listen now switches audio off for the remaining cards in that session without ending it.

Turning audio off elsewhere

The Audio game is separate from Autoplay audio, which plays a card's pronunciation automatically in the other games. That one is in your language settings and applies to any account with audio available.
