Import an Anki deck
If your vocabulary lives in Anki, you can bring it across as an .apkg file.
Exporting from Anki
In Anki, choose the deck, then Export, and save it as an Anki Deck Package (.apkg). You don't need to include scheduling information - Yalango builds its own review schedule.
Importing
- Open the deck you want to import into on Yalango.
- Choose Import, then Anki.
- Upload the
.apkgfile.
The file is read in your browser, so a large collection takes a moment to process.
Mapping fields
Anki notes often have many fields, and this is where Anki imports usually go wrong elsewhere. Yalango shows you each note type in the file and lets you decide what each field becomes:
- The target side of the card - the language you're learning.
- The source side - the meaning.
- A custom field, so extras like example sentences, gender or usage notes come across too. Yalango can create the custom field for you.
- Ignore, for fields you don't want.
If your export contains several note types, the first is ready to import and the others stay switched off until you enable them. This is deliberate - a collection with "Basic" and "Cloze" note types usually only has one you actually want.
Yalango suggests a mapping to start from, but check it. Anki field names are often generic, and the suggestion can't know which of "Front" and "Back" holds your target language.
Two limits
- Media is not imported. Audio and image references in your notes are stripped. On Premium, Yalango can generate its own audio for imported cards.
- Very large files are truncated. Files with more than 100,000 notes are read up to that point, and you'll be told if that happened.
After importing
Cards behave like any you typed in, and enter your vocabulary right away. Imports count toward your card limit - on the free plan you'll be warned before an import would take you over.
Since Anki collections tend to be large, it's worth using the vocabulary bulk actions afterwards to mark the words you already know as Learnt, so your reviews start out useful.
