Google Text-to-Speech with Yalango

Yalango uses Google Text-to-Speech to generate spoken audio for your study material.

Deck-card audio is generated automatically when you save a card if the deck is public, or if you are on Premium. Text audio and the Audio game stay Premium. Anyone can play a speaker button on a card that already has audio.

Where audio is generated

• Deck cards - created automatically for public decks and for Premium accounts. Publishing a private deck generates audio for cards that do not have it yet. See Generate audio for your cards.
• Texts - Premium only. Use Generate Audio on a text to have each sentence voiced. See Import a text.

Where you can hear it

• A speaker button on cards in your deck and your vocabulary list.
• Automatically during games, if Autoplay audio is on in your language settings.
• Sentence by sentence in text study mode.
• On sentence blocks in notebooks.
• In the Audio game, which needs at least 4 cards with audio.

Supported languages

Google Text-to-Speech has voices for over 50 languages, which covers most widely studied languages but not all of them. Where no voice exists, Yalango says so rather than offering the option - that's a limitation on Google's side, so publishing the deck or upgrading to Premium won't unlock it.

For Chinese, your simplified or traditional script preference is respected.

Things worth knowing

• Premium fills in missing audio automatically. Once you upgrade, a nightly background job generates audio for older deck cards and vocabulary items that don't have it yet. A very large library can take a few nights to finish, and cards that already have audio are left alone. Saving a card again generates its audio straight away.
• Publishing a deck also generates audio for the cards in it that still need it, even on the free plan.
• Editing a text clears its audio. Generate audio after you've finished editing, not before.
• Exports never include audio files. A deck export covers the text of your cards only.

On the free plan

Public decks get card audio. Private decks do not, unless you upgrade. The card editor offers both: publish the deck, or upgrade for audio on private decks.

Text audio is not included. The Audio game stays Premium either way. Nothing else about your cards is affected.
