Google Text-to-Speech with Yalango
Yalango uses Google Text-to-Speech to generate spoken audio for your study material. This is a Premium feature.
Where audio is generated
- Deck cards - created automatically when a Premium account saves a card. See Generate audio for your cards.
- Texts - use Generate Audio on a text to have each sentence voiced. See Import a text.
Where you can hear it
- A speaker button on cards in your deck and your vocabulary list.
- Automatically during games, if Autoplay audio is on in your language settings.
- Sentence by sentence in text study mode.
- On sentence blocks in notebooks.
- In the Audio game, which needs at least 4 cards with audio.
Supported languages
Around 65 languages have voices, which covers most widely studied languages but not all of them. Where no voice exists, Yalango says so rather than offering the option - that's a limitation on Google's side, so a Premium subscription won't unlock it.
For Chinese, your simplified or traditional script preference is respected.
Things worth knowing
- Audio isn't generated retroactively. Upgrading to Premium doesn't add audio to cards you already had; saving a card again triggers it.
- Editing a text clears its audio. Generate audio after you've finished editing, not before.
- Exports never include audio files. A deck export covers the text of your cards only.
On the free plan
You'll see where audio would appear, with a note that text-to-speech is a premium feature. Nothing else about your cards or texts is affected.
