Flashcards, Quiz and Write

These three games are available on every deck and form the backbone of Mix. They ask the same question at three different difficulties.

Flashcards

Flip the card to reveal the answer, then mark whether you got it right.

You're the judge, which makes flashcards fast but easy to be generous with. Decide before you flip - if you had to think "it's something like...", that's a wrong answer.

Best for a first pass through new material, and for anything where an exact answer is too strict.

Quiz

Pick the correct answer from four options.

Quiz needs at least 4 cards in the deck, since the wrong options are drawn from your other cards. That also means it gets harder in a deck of closely related words, which is usually a good thing.

Recognising the right answer among four is easier than recalling it from nothing, so a high quiz score doesn't guarantee you could produce the word yourself.

Write

Type the translation.

This is the strictest of the three and the most useful, because it's the only one where you have to produce the language rather than recognise it. It's also where card quality shows: if a card has a synonym you typed instead of the expected answer, you'll be marked wrong.

Two things help:

  • Keep one meaning per card.
  • Put the disambiguating context on the card, so there's only one reasonable answer.

Write always prompts with the source word, so Show first doesn't apply to it.

Show first

Flashcards, Quiz and Mix let you choose what appears as the prompt:

  • Target - see the word you're learning and recall the meaning. This is recognition, the easier direction.
  • Source - see the meaning and recall the target word. This is production, and much harder.
  • Mix - randomised per card.

Practising both directions is worth the discomfort. Most learners can recognise far more words than they can produce, and only the source-first direction fixes that.

What gets recorded

Every answer updates the item's SRS level and counts toward your daily goal as you play, not at the end of the session. Wrong answers are also saved so you can replay them later.
