Save words while watching
Use the Translate panel to look up words from a video, keep the sentence you heard them in, and save the whole batch to a deck with a link back to each moment.
The point of watching a video on Yalango rather than on YouTube is the panel beside it. It lets you collect the words you didn't know and turn them into a deck in one go - with the sentence and the moment in the video still attached.
The workflow
- Turn on captions in the YouTube player.
- When you hit a word you don't know, type it into the Translate panel. The video pauses while you type.
- Choose Translate, and optionally Add the sentence you heard it in.
- Choose Add to list to queue it. The video carries on.
- When you're done, Choose a deck and Save {n} words to deck.
Words are queued first and saved as a batch at the end, so you're not interrupting the video with a deck picker every time.
Listening tools
Above the Translate box:
- 5s jumps back five seconds.
- Loop replays the last five seconds until you turn it off - useful for a word you can't quite make out.
- 0.5x - 1.25x changes the playback speed.
- Pause while typing can be switched off if you'd rather the video kept playing while you look something up.
The video's language
Words are saved in the language of the video, not whichever language is selected in the menu. If you're learning Spanish and French and open a French video with Spanish selected, the panel translates from French and offers your French decks.
For a video you added yourself without choosing a language, pick it in the language chip at the top of the panel.
Sentences and clip links
When you save, you can choose what goes on each card besides the word and its translation:
- Sentences - the sentence you typed for the word goes into a text field on the card (a new Sentence field, or one the deck already has). Tick Use as cloze field to practise it in the Cloze game, with the word blanked out.
- Clip link - a link to the exact moment you looked the word up goes into a Video clip field. During review it shows as Watch the clip, which opens the video at that point.
Yalango remembers your choices for each deck.
Timestamps
Every queued word records the moment in the video where you found it. Clicking the timestamp jumps the player back there. The Looked up in this video list keeps every word you translated, with its timestamp, so you can still add one you skipped.
Your list is kept
The list is kept in this browser per video, so a reload or an accidental back doesn't lose it. Come back to the video later and the words you queued are still there. Nothing is stored in your account until you save to a deck.
A deck for each video
In the deck picker, Create a deck for this video makes a deck named after the video and linked to it. If you make the deck public, it appears under the video for other learners watching it.
Words you don't need translated
Add without translating lets you enter the word, its meaning and the sentence yourself. Use it when you already know the meaning, when you'd rather write a definition in your own words, or when you've used up your monthly translations.
Translation quota
Translations here draw on the same monthly allowance as everywhere else: 300 per month on the free plan, unlimited on Premium. There's no extra charge or separate limit for Watch.
If you're working through a dense video, adding words without translating and filling in meanings later is a good way to stretch a free allowance.
Where the words end up
Saved words become cards in whichever deck you chose, which puts them straight into your vocabulary and your spaced repetition queue. Keeping one deck per series or channel keeps the context together and makes the reviews feel connected to something you actually watched.
