Yalango Watch turns YouTube videos into a language-learning tool. Instead of just watching, you can translate what you hear, save the words you didn't know, and pick up where you left off.
Finding something to watch
Three tabs:
- Curated library - videos gathered from channels chosen for language learners, filterable by language, channel and length (Under 5 min, 5 - 15 min, 15 - 30 min, 30+ min). You can also hide videos you've already watched.
- Saved - videos you've bookmarked, including your own additions.
- Watch history - what you've been through.
Adding your own video
Paste any YouTube link or video ID into the box at the top of the page and choose Watch. Signed in, you can Save it with a target language so it turns up in your Saved tab later.
Your additions are private to you - they don't go into the curated library.
While watching
The side panel is where the learning happens. Turn on YouTube's closed captions, pause when something catches you out, and use the Translate panel to look the word up. See Save words while watching.
You can also Mark as watched, vote on a video, and leave comments.
Picking up where you left off
Your position is remembered. Returning to a video offers Continue from {time} or Start over.
Stars
Marking a video as watched for the first time earns a star.
What you need an account for
Browsing and watching work signed out. Translating, saving words to a deck, marking videos watched, and progress tracking all need an account.
A note on captions
Captions come from YouTube itself, so how good they are depends on the video. Channels that add proper subtitles are much easier to study from than ones relying on YouTube's automatic captions, which is worth keeping in mind when choosing what to watch.
